I’m new to photography, having only purchased a D3100 recently. I’m admittedly afraid of damaging this camera and saw this skin with a single review. I thought I’d try it out anyways, and have liked it so far. The material is a soft rubber, matte in color. It feels nice to the touch, though it looks less than $34 (paid) in quality.

    What it covers:
-It covers all of the buttons, except the knobs. The buttons are still very easily pressed, including the lens release.
-The media ports are covered in the opposite direction, which makes it kind of inconvenient to open the flap one way, hold it open, then open the media flap the other way. This is not a sticking point for me as I don’t use them much and it certainly does not prevent you from using them.
-The glass screen is covered with what appears to be just a pop in hard plastic cover, clear of course. But the package also came with some stick on glass covers. There was no instruction provided in the package as to why one or the other should be used. Clearly the plastic pop in should be used, but I’d rather not need to adhere something to the glass screen unless they fear dirt getting between and scratching the glass. No literature provided to explain, so time will tell.
-The flash mount is covered, but easily slides back out of the way to allow a quick mount. Again, the material is very soft.

    What is not covered:
-The command knob is open of course, and it is a little tight around it. Not so much that I cannot use it at all, but at first glance you’ll think it is obstructed. The material has enough give that it works normally.
-It has openings for audio related holes.
-The media card panel is not covered, probably because of the softness of the material and the length of the card cover on the
    D3100′s body.
-The bottom is not covered, but does wrap the corners. This is a sticking point for me. It is not enough of a problem that I can’t recommend this, but it has some practical flaws where if you handle the camera from the bottom, and rub the back lip near the screen it will pop out the plastic cover almost every time. Perhaps a bigger bead of the material could have been used for the opening to make it less flexible and to prevent this. Or perhaps a tighter mounting for the glass cover. If you were looking for a portrait battery mount setup, you could not use this skin with it because of the way it covers the bottom. Though I don’t see many buying D3100′s for professional portrait use. Never know though.

At a glance it looks kind of cheap, it fits good enough, and using it (other than the glass cover popping out every once in a while by me not being mindful) I have no real deal breaking complaints.

I knock off one star for the price. I do feel that for $34 bucks, it could have been constructed slightly better at openings often brushed by or touched, or at least come with some instructions for those who might need them. I knock off another star for the fitment at the bottom. I still recommend this over nothing as what it does NOT do is get in the way of using the camera.

After spending quite a chunk of change to buy the Nikon D3100 and several lenses, I decided to buy a skin. I couldn’t have been more impressed by the quality of the material, and how perfectly well it fits! I feel much more confident toting my new camera around in this protective covering!

If you are a klutz like me and accidently bang your expensive camera on blunt objects from time to time you need this cover. As its name implies it provides a snug fit on the camera, and there is a plastic lens that allows you to view the LCD with negligible viewing interference. The lens is a loose fit in the skin and I was initially concerned that it might fall out during use but that has not been a problem. The only challenge is to read the markings for the camera controls, some of which are covered by the skin. If I was really familiar with my Nikon, that would not be a problem but I’m still in a learning mode. But this is a good investment to protect your expensive camera
